September 19 marked the start of Energikontor Syd’s training on the energy dimension in urban planning practices. The training, targeted to city and regional professionals, aims to enhance primarily public sector capacity to address the challenges arising from continued electrification and climate change. A second training session is planned as the course is already fully booked.
In the current situation of energy crisis and accelerating climate change, solutions in energy transition play a critical role. To incorporate the energy dimension in urban planning can result in better energy security, reducing climate impact, and a stronger local economy. In recent years, Energikontor Syd has seen increased interest in urban planning incorporating energy and climate dimensions from the EU, government agencies, regions and cities, demanding public sector skills development.
“City and county councils see a need for urban planning including dimensions of energy and climate”, says Gustaf Wiklund, project manager at Energikontor Syd. “Growing power demands and sharply rising energy prices clash with limited power grids’ capacity and load shortages, underlining the urgency of better planning.”
Hands-on experience
The course aims to provide participants with a toolbox for municipal and regional energy planning. With national and global perspectives as background, the successful participant will be able to develop, implement, and follow up on municipal energy plans. The training mainly targets professionals engaged in local and regional energy planning, additional interest coming from urban planners and resilience officers.

Interest in the training has been so high that not all applicants were able to secure a spot. An additional training session is therefore planned for 2025.
The training:
The training runs from September 19 to November 28 and consists of a total of 40 hours, of which 24 hours are online and 16 hours (two full days) take place on-site in Lund. The content of the training is partly based on the Swedish Act on Municipal Energy Planning (1977:439) and the Swedish Energy Agency’s guidance for municipal energy planning. Upon completion of the training, a diploma is awarded.

Energy and Climate Planning for Municipalities and Regions is offered free of charge by Energikontor Syd as part of Plan4CET – a project focused on strategic support for energy planning for municipalities in Skåne County, funded by Life Clean Energy Transition (LIFE CET) with co-financing from Region Skåne.
